JIS case a result of ministry’s negligence, says legal aid institute

The Keadilan Legal Aid Institute (LBH) said the sexual assault case involving a Jakarta International School (JIS) student was caused by negligence on the part of the Education and Culture Ministry.
“The absence of the school’s Kindergarten permit was due to the negligence of the Education and Culture Ministry and the Jakarta Education Agency in carrying out monitoring activities,” LBH Keadilan head Abdul Hamim Jauzie said in a release on Monday, as quoted by Antara news agency.
He said the Education and Culture Ministry had allowed JIS to run the kindergarten despite the absence of a permit, citing Lydia Freyani Hawad, director general of non-formal and informal early childhood education (PAUDNI) at the Education and Culture Ministry, who said that the ministry had been urging JIS to obtain a kindergarten permit since January, far before the disgraceful incident was disclosed in media.
“This means that since January, the ministry has known that JIS’ kindergarten has been operating without permit,” said Abdul.
He further said the ministry should have closed the kindergarten in January.
The LBH Keadilan, he added, had urged the House of Representatives to ask the Education and Culture Ministry to take responsibility of the JIS case. (ebf)
